Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company - Defy convention

Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company has been expanding the boundaries of American theatre and serving the Washington, DC community since 1980. For more than three decades, we have garnered a national reputation as the most innovative theatre in America for our work in developing, producing and promoting challenging and provocative new plays.

While we don’t hesitate to take risks with new writers and confrontational new plays, we leave little else up to chance, investing in each new play with world-class directors, designers, and actors, a state-of-the-art facility, and a sophisticated audience with a taste for challenging new work.

The results? We have received 203 Helen Hayes Award nominations and 35 Helen Hayes Awards for artistic work, including 10 awards for Outstanding New Play. Plays that have premiered at Woolly have gone on to productions at more than 200 theatres across America and around the world; Woolly Company members have emerged as stars of the D.C. theatre scene; and we have played a catalytic role in the careers of provocative playwrights such as Sarah Ruhl, David Lindsay-Abaire, Nicky Silver, Craig Wright, Danai Gurira, Jason Grote, David Adjmi, and many more.

None of our work would be possible without your support. Ticket sales cover only 40% of what it costs to run the theatre, the rest comes from the generosity of supporters like you.
