Michael John Garcés

Michael is a director and playwright. At Woolly, Michael has directed The Convert by Danai Gurira, Oedipus el Rey by Luis Alfaro, and Grace and Recent Tragic Events by Craig Wright.  He has been the Artistic Director of Cornerstone Theatre Company in Los Angeles, a community-engaged ensemble, since 2006.  For Cornerstone, Michael most recently directed Café Vida by Lisa Loomer; he also wrote Los Illegals, created in collaboration with communities of day laborers and domestic workers, and Consequence, out of interviews and story circles with students, teachers, parents and administrators in Arvin, California.  Other plays he has directed include red, black and GREEN: a blues by Marc Bamuthi Joseph, which premiered at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and has toured nationally to venues such as The Brooklyn Academy of Music and The Walker Art Center.   He has also directed at South Coast Repertory, The Humana Festival (Actors Theatre of Louisville), A Contemporary Theater, Hartford Stage, New York Theatre Workshop, The Children's Theatre Company, The Guthrie Theatre, Second Stage, Huntington Theatre Company, Yale Repertory Theatre, Playwrights Horizons, The Cherry Lane, The Atlantic Theater Company, and Repertorio Español.  His full-length plays include THE WEB (needtheatre), points of departure and customs (INTAR Hispanic American Arts Center), and Acts of Mercy (Rattlestick Playwrights Theater); short plays include grief and catch (Active Cultures), hymn in three parts (Chalk Rep), in the Zone (Red Fern Theatre Co.), tostitos (Ensemble Studio Theatre Marathon of One-Act Plays), on edge and the ride (Humana Festival), audiovideo (The Directors Project), and sandlot ball (Mile Square). Michael is on the executive board of the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society. He is a proud alumnus of New Dramatists. Michael is a recipient of the Princess Grace Statue, the Alan Schneider Director Award, and a TCG/New Generations Grant. He has two children, Christina, currently attending the University of Pennsylvania, and Eben, who is four years old.
